Thanks! I heard about them too, they are definitely an inspiration! I am a leisure blogger, don’t really operate it like a full time job, I should though! I am not very good at networking and advertising on social media, but it appears that you are very great at it!
Hi, Teodora! We will be launching our updated Building a Framework course on March 7th that I think could be very helpful. It will be here when the time comes: https://justagirlandherblog.com/framework/. Thanks and good luck on your blogging journey!
Over the past eight years, I’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the smartest bloggers on the planet. I worked with Brian Clark as he built Copyblogger to a multimillion dollar brand. Neil Patel and Hiten Shah also hired me to help them launch the KISSmetrics blog, eventually creating a multimillion dollar SaaS company.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that making money blogging is not possible by putting your site up and letting it sit there. The “if you build it, they will come” mentality doesn’t work here, so be sure you’re willing to put in the time. Most bloggers don’t see a spike of income for several months (sometimes years) after starting their blog. Before you dive too deep into blogging, remember these little bits of advice:
I am combining goals 6 and 7 because I didn’t accomplish either of them. One of the top Google ranking factors is backlinks, so in 2017, I focused on trying to get as many as I could. I was pretty successful getting backlinks from the media, but didn’t take the time to connect with as many brands as I wanted. But looking back, 100 new backlinks per month was a pretty crazy goal. Also when it comes to sharing, I don’t use a social plugin that tracks the shares, but I estimate I get about 50 to 60 per post. Some posts, however, like the $50 a day early retirement strategy I know have been shared over 500 times. In reality for 2018, I’m not planning any goals for backlinks or shares and don’t have any plans to develop an active backlink building strategy. I’m going to spend my time creating quality content instead.
Jon, it’s so disheartening to read this list. Not for my sake, but for the sake of all the hobby bloggers I know who keep asking me why their blogs aren’t getting the traffic, attention, or sales they were hoping for, and how in the world can I be building my email list before I even start blogging? Am I STUPID or something?!
This concept can also be applied to services in all types of industries. For instance, if you offered electronic repair services as opposed to physical products, you could still use the same blogging concept to increase brand awareness and convert more clients.
Our blog actually covers travel tips and insights into expat life along the Oaxacan coast of Mexico, so I am not sure that those sites would be the target audience for our blog’s content even if they were more accessible, which clearly they aren’t.
Email marketing may generate you lots of money . The important is to develop a large subscriber list of your customers/visitors . When people signup to become a member , you get their email address . When people join your weekly newsletter , you get their email address . The a lot more ways there are to get someone’s email address the much better .
Hi Matt! It’s difficult to get started monetizing the blog especially when the ad companies dont approve. Just keep making tweaks to your blog and keep sending the requests to join. Eventually they will let you in.
Gawd, I’m tired just looking at that blog total! No idea how I do it. This figure, of course, doesn’t count the posts about writing I create for this blog…so you can add another 8-10 posts a month there. To sum up, I’m a blogging fool these days!
Any who I just wanted to say your income report is expiring and I only hope by 6 months to have made something. As it stands now with my 200 pageviews I have earned about a $1.00, but I am proud of that dollar.
My dad and I invest in multi-family real estate. Through blogging, I’m hoping to chronicle our experiences and challenges, and provide tips to people who might be interested. Making money doing this would be awesome.
My affiliate revenue fluctuates a lot month to month, but I’m going to try and make it more consistent and grow it in 2018. Most, but not all of the affiliates I work with are listed on my best money tools page. I am in the process of scaling a few of my affiliate relationships that align well with Millennial Money. I also run display ads through the AdThrive network and work with MyFinance – both have solid payouts per pageview, but I’ve been scaling them back a little bit to make the reading experience cleaner.
Ebooks are an obvious choice for creating digital products. They are relatively simple to write and produce. If you’ve been blogging for a while, then you can collect some of your old blog posts and turn them into chapters of a book.
As I have been inspired by you I’ve created a list with my favourite bloggers and I included you and your blog in it. I hope you don’t mind. The link is here http://passiveincomewise.com/favourite-bloggers/
thanks for sharing the info,as a newbie blogger i am always interesting in knowing what is earning potential of blogs and when i see that kind of figures then feel happy that there is enough potential which i want to earn.

As I write this, it just so happens that I’m in the initial stages of starting a new blog (more details to be announced soon). It’s in a completely different space where I have no products, so I’ve been pondering the best way to monetize it, and here’s what I think…
For instance, we have a guest blogging course that retails for $497. In exchange, we promise to help students get featured on a big blog or magazine like The Huffington Post or Forbes. I think it’s fair to say that exposure is worth $5,000 to the right person. So, the product sells easily and well.
I had never considered the value of giving webinars. I had attended plenty of webinars and purchased some products based on same. It hadn’t occurred to me the economic value of giving webinars prior to reading your post.
If you find a popular blog that exactly covers your topic, be aware that it will be difficult to compete with them. Try to tweak your topic to a slightly different but related subject, so you complement the popular blogs instead of trying to overtake them.
I don’t know many bloggers who earn money from their blog alone. By that, I’m referencing mainly to my previous point about thinking bigger than your blog. Most bloggers don’t earn a living just from selling sidebar ads and writing one post everyday. A Beautiful Mess sells books and e-courses. Designlovefest teaches Blogshop, a popular Photoshop workshop for bloggers. Oh Joy! just created a line of products for Target. These are some of the biggest bloggers I know of, yet they are constantly innovating and thinking of new ways to use their blog as a creative starting point and marketing tool. Be an innovator. Branch out.
If you’re blogging in another language, I would recommend just focus on posting amazing content and then asking influencers to share it for you. You have much less competition, so it should be fairly effective.
I am not even sure if you ever read this comment of mine and I cant blame you either . You guys have been up to your new blog and I do understand there is soo much to do coupled with the responsibility of being a mother and a wife.
I would suggest you one thing. It would be better to post the income reports each month. After few months, you would have a considerable post and when someone will need to see the income proof, he or she will come to your site. You may get linking to your posts.
Offering a service is an excellent way to make money quickly because startup costs are low, little to no inventory is required and you get paid for a skill you already have. The downside is, it’s not scalable.
You can begin accepting donations in a few different ways. You could add a Paypal donate button or a Stripe donate button to your website. Or for a more professional look and advanced features like email marketing integration, you could use WPForms to create a donation form on your WordPress site.
I love it when you share! Please keep in mind that all images and text on this site are property of Just a Girl and Her Blog. Pinning is always welcome and appreciated! Thank you!
Excellent post, and very encouraging! My coworker knows I love to write and was toying with the idea of starting a blog, so for Christmas he offered to go halvsies on my hosting and domain. That was definitely the push I needed, and I did a ton a of research before finally taking the leap, but I still feel like there is so much I need to get a good handle on!
The other type of product some bloggers sell is physical products. This is most common when the blogger has a business but sometimes bloggers also create merchandise (T-shirts etc) or other physical products to sell.
However for many people who are always prepared everyday carry is about having everything you might need in an emergency or for general use on you at all times. This will often include a light source (torch), a pocket knife, some small tools & rope it’s quite amazing how easy it is to carry all these things with you in your pockets, on your keys or in a small bag.
You can manage a WordPress blog from mobile browser. However, this will be difficult as many features on your screen would appear different or may not be visible. Plugins will be unable to adjust their settings page to your device size. In short, it is not practical in the long run.
Thank you so much for this information. I will reread this several times as I am sure it will be very helpful. I am a new Blogger and hope to create something interesting and fun for my readers – and make some money too.. If you could please add me to your email list, I would really appreciate any future info. Thank you again!
In addition to hitting 7 of my 10 goals, I also got to speak at FinCon, be a guest on 41 podcasts (here are my favorite episodes), was featured in over 100 media outlets including CNBC, NPR, and The Washington Post, signed a book deal with Penguin Random House, left my corporate 9 to 5, wrote my first contributor article for CNBC on Bitcoin, was filmed for a financial independence documentary, (got to meet, then chill, then work with Vicki Robin, the author of my favorite book of all time Your Money or Your Life), and also started coaching a select group of entrepreneurs one-on-one. While all spots are currently filled, if you are interested in personal coaching you can sign up here.

Thank you so very much for all the helpful advice! I’m getting ready to start my own blog and I’m a little intimated! I’m hoping to start posting and getting my domain and all that jazz within the next few months! I enjoy your posts and all the helpful tips!!!
Wow, this is a great post with tons of data-driven insights that would take me years to figure out on my own. You can earn a good income from blogging, but I’m not sure I want to do it this way myself. I’m more interested in becoming a ghostblogger for businesses.
It’s definitely important to diversify when it comes to affiliates – both the programs themselves as well as the products / companies you promote within each program. Most of them have some sort of minimum payout, so it can take a lot of little drops in the bucket before a payout.
If you can’t find any popular blogs related to your topic, you probably went too niche. People interested in a topic will often visit several related blogs, and each blogger can link to the other to direct more traffic to each site.
Congrats on the paycheck! I’ve had my blog for about a month now. Growing enough followers to get Adsense to work for me has been a chore. Nice to know that others have a similar story, that it is work, that it didn’t come easy, but that the work paid off.
Selling e-books is fine and dandy if you have half a dozen more expensive products to offer your customer afterwards, but it’s downright silly if you don’t. You’re much better off creating and selling the expensive product first, and then gradually building cheaper and cheaper products.
Question for you. What’s your opinion on turning off blog comments? I like engaging with readers and bloggers and having a dialogue with them. But I know some bloggers are turning off their comments. I don’t know about this. Some readers may feel you’re turning your back on them. Others may not care at all.
Success in every facet of life is based on who you know and not what you know 🙂 The secret is to start connecting with more people, if you build your network wide enough you’ll meet someone who can help you, no matter what it is that you are trying to achieve. Some meet these influential people more quickly by complete luck of the draw, others need to keep plugging along longer. The system works either way, and whether or not it works better for others is irrelevant, all systems in life work better for some than others.
#9 – Well Kept Wallet – $1534 in April of 2016 – Deacon’s income is from a good mix of sources, including ad networks, native advertising, affiliate income, and he also includes freelance writing income in this report.
I need some help, I see that you said that building a site that is based on a niche is much more profitable. I have one question, how about a site that isn’t based on a niche. I often blog about many things. Sometimes, they’re not related to each other at all. In terms of SEO, will it have any massive negative impact? Thanks in advance.
I’m a blogger/entrepreneur specialising in blogging to women 35 – 65 who are AB demographicI’ve been researching this topic for the past month. I’m making about $500 a week from my 4 month old blog for paid placements, but would like to make more through affiliate marketing but am still building my content and traffic.
Jon, this is a great article. Thank you. As usual, you are full of useful information. I am new to blogging (just launched in March) and I initially started with the small e-mail list from my business website, which does not have a blog. I started a completely new website after realizing I was on the wrong platform altogether to grow an audience. I learned this thanks to the information you and other professional bloggers provide. You recommend affiliate marketing to monetize a small new blog, which are my exact thoughts for my blog. Do you have an affiliate program? If so I would love to promote your info on my site. Thanks again!
Loved this article. I do get caught up with wasting time sharing to Twitter and Facebook and not seeing the traffic. I had my 1st Blogiversary in Nov 2014 and am getting a lot of positive feedback but not seeing the traffic. How do you get on some guest blog spots? We have an 1820 Farmhouse and do most of the work restoring the house and also I have a passion for cooking so I do a lot of food presentation and recipes. Love to hear what you think at BeFedAgain.com
Michelle currently makes around $120,000 per month from affiliate marketing alone, so she knows what the hell she’s talking about. You also get access to her private Facebook group where you will be able to draw on the experience of others in the affiliate marketing community.
I commented on your other page too. Sorry! How and what do you mean to do the affiliate links. I took the Blogelina class and she mentioned them too. I do the Google Ads but would love to start making more money wise. Would you comment more on how to do the affiliate part? Thanks!
Ive been so busy working in illustration through my site that most of the time there´s no room to work on anything else but after reading your text i think i need to find some extra time asp to go back to blogging….thanks.
My other point is to say, don’t blog for $10 a post. There are living-wage blogging jobs out there. Anywhere a company or publication needs to talk to a specialized audience, there’s an opportunity. Blogging really can pay the bills.
Alexander, thank you so much for championing this cause and pulling this list together. I have been inspired by many bloggers income reports over the last year and felt a calling to put together a site that documents each of their journeys so that we can all learn from those who have gone before us, whether they made $10 or $10k.
WOW Jon! great post, Only read it quickly so I will go over it again later! Lesson 9 is the eye opener! I find it really difficult to give away great content that I have just spent hours writing, but as you say, it’s got to be done!!
When an up-and-coming band auditions to be an opening act, do you think the more famous band cares where they have played? Not really. All they care about is the strength of the audition. If the up-and-coming band is good, they get the gig. If they suck, it doesn’t matter where they played or how good everyone else says they are, they get a polite no.
