Jamie, Thanks you for this wonderful post. Blogging is the best making money business if someone treat it like a business. Your good content cannot make you money if you don’t know how to monetize your blog.
I LOVE this post and have shared it as far and wide as I can. I must admit, having recently started writing for the HuffPost, I’ve felt guilty for hardly posting anything on my own blog (just don’t have the time to do both) so your post has made me feel much better for prioritising the guest posting.
Hi Kristin! Yeah I was going to let you know later today that you were on here. Glad you saw it already. Haha don’t feel bad about the blog income, im almost at the very end. It’s truly amazing though how much $$ bloggers are making.
This is a wealth of information at my fingertips! I like how you structured the links on this page in such an organized manner. I think that if you want to be a successful blogger you need to create multiple streams of income and not just depend on one to get you to the top.
Thanks so much Jon. I have been struggling to ‘get off the ground’ and am devouring your insight and knowledge. You offer such invaluable and proven information and are totally inspiring. I know I CAN DO THIS and will continue to soak up your posts as they come through. I won’t wast too much time now on Facebook and Twitter which I’ve been trying to get my head around. You see I am very new to everything!
Hi Dawood! Im glad you are inspired by these. I am also trust me! Its amazing. I like the idea of putting down when the blog was created but not all the bloggers have this info handy. I can tell you that my personal income report is from a new blogger. July 2015 was my 2nd full month of ever blogging. So far my numbers have been increasing in every category which is awesome!
This goes against the grain of 90% of what I’ve learned from the”experts” in the last 9 months of blogging. But man it feels right. I’m so worried about short term gains that I’m not building a long term foundation. I’m thinking so small! These lessons are profound, Jon. Thanks!
Man, I can’t believe how gimmicky a lot of those blog are at the top of the list-most of the products they offer are like infomercials + self help books. Still trying to figure out how they make money other than the how to write a blog tutorials.
If you’re blogging in another language, I would recommend just focus on posting amazing content and then asking influencers to share it for you. You have much less competition, so it should be fairly effective.
#19 – Sarah Titus – $23,424 in December of 2015 – This is Sarah again (also linked above). Almost $14,000 of that total comes from affiliates (noticing a trend here?). She also earns from ad networks and book sales.
In the case of my blog, about 99% of my early readers would come, read a single article, and then leave forever. So instead of missing out on a potential regular, I started gathering email addresses using a service called Awebber, but these days I prefer GetResponse.
When I was at Copyblogger, we ran a little experiment. Normally, we refused to sell any ads on the site, but just as a test, we decided to put three ad spots in the right sidebar. The site looked like this:
Keywords are especially important when using third party ad services, since the ads are chosen based on the keywords you use. Inaccurate or insufficient keywords will result in ads that don’t match your readers’ interests.
It allows you to quickly insert links into posts, create branded links, auto-replace keywords into links, and even see how each link is performing on your site. You can see our guide on how to add affiliate links in WordPress with ThirstyAffiliates for more info.
Tiếng Việt: Kiếm tiền Trên Blog
C. The process works as a filter rather than a funnel. You expose your work to thousands, you hope to add value to those thousands for no cost to yourself but of those thousands there will be a few hundred who need your service and they pay for those things in proportion to the cost to you in terms of time or resources.
You suggest not posting on your blog until you have a decent amount of subscribers, you also mention how surveys are dangerous for finding what your audience needs – My question is: How do you decide what your audience needs a service for if you’ve yet to build an audience?
As your blog grows, you may want to change the look of your site and add more features for your growing audience. That means it’s important to choose a blogging platform that’s flexible, with room to grow.
I commented on your other page too. Sorry! How and what do you mean to do the affiliate links. I took the Blogelina class and she mentioned them too. I do the Google Ads but would love to start making more money wise. Would you comment more on how to do the affiliate part? Thanks!
Ad networks are kind of like the middle men. They work with brands and companies to create ad campaigns and sponsorships with bloggers. There are various types of collaborations that they facilitate, from sidebar ads to sponsored posts (i.e. posts dedicated to a certain brand, like this one). If you’ve ever seen a sponsored post on a blog, it was likely the product of a collaboration with an ad network (though, not always). Below are some of the most popular (and in my experience, best) ad networks for bloggers. The first three are the ones I’ve had the most success with.
A very informative article , it helped me in clearing my doubts about online money making . Bloggers like you help hundreds of new and budding bloggers like me to understand things and move ahead . Thank you very much .
If you already have a blog and are interested in monetizing it, you can can get actual real world examples, tips and ideas on how to do this by reading these monthly income reports. Find out how it’s already being accomplished.
promoting your expertise to deliver training or consultancy services to businesses can be a highly profitable way to create an online income. In the past I have helped lots of businesses get started blogging by working with them to create editorial calendars and giving their marketing teams tips to promote their posts. Whether you’re an Excel guru, a marketing whiz or a customer services master you can build up your profile on your blog.
If you have not yet created a blog but want to, check this easy step by step guide on how to create a blog in just minutes. You too can make money blogging. This however is not a get rich quick scheme or anything of the like. It is very difficult to make money blogging and it takes so much time, experience and effort to accomplish this. I know because in the short time I have been blogging, I have barely made any money at all from it and I’ve poured my heart and soul into Cash Flow Diaries. I’m still trying to learn from others how to properly make money blogging and in the mean time, I will continue logging my journey to financial freedom and trying to help others get there.
It’s definitely important to diversify when it comes to affiliates – both the programs themselves as well as the products / companies you promote within each program. Most of them have some sort of minimum payout, so it can take a lot of little drops in the bucket before a payout.
Membership sites can be a big time investment since you must continually create premium content for your paying members. But they can be very lucrative because they are recurring revenue (subscriptions).
Point #6 about deliberately delaying the sale happens to have this added benefit of giving the blogger more insight into the audience through the way they interact with the blog. i.e. The posts they read, the comments they leave etc.
Can you share more of your thoughts about being on TV? For some reason, I have no desire to be on TV and promote myself, which I’m wondering whether that’s unusual or not. What is it about TV that makes it especially attractive? Is it a personality trait one needs to possess? What do you think are the benefits of being on TV?
This post is amazing. I am a newbie and had no idea about how to proceed. This was an eye opener. I was investing too much in SEO, though I neither had good content nor links with the influences.I am really grateful that you brought out this topic.
I have a blog that uses a wordpress theme, and blue host hosts my domain name. However, I don’t really understand what a platform is and I don’t know what my platform is. I am planning to start a new food blog with a different focus and use wordpress.org (whatever that actually means.) Does wordpress.org help you with setting up and explaining whether or not they are your platform? I am a granny (79 to be exact.) I have a three year old cooking blog that never gets visitors except for family and friends. I would like to do better with my blog, but I don’t even understand the idea of platform. Can you give me some advice as to how to proceed?
My blog is a blog for blogging. To express my thoughts, and maybe make money as a side effect. There is a huge difference between those situations, and the differences lead the use of ads, guest posts and so on.
Pat Flynn, for example, makes over $100,000 a month in affiliate commissions. Here at Smart Blogger, we mostly promote our own products, but we also make a tidy sum promoting LeadPages and SiteGround:
The truth is you are better to put out 5 – 10 smaller products around one big product that way if your goal is to make $5,000 a month, it will be easier to make $500 to $1,000 per product then it would be to make the full $5,000 from one product.
Selling physical products online can be hard to setup as you will need to deal with storage, shipping and even deal with things such as local taxes and distance selling laws. Of course a lot of this headache can be resolved by finding a company who will offer a white-label or drop shipping service leaving you to worry about getting traffic and updating the website.
I did not make any money from my first blogs for almost 18 months (I didn’t even know you could so did not try) and when I did start to try to make money from them the first income was just a few dollars a week – but gradually in time my income grew from a part time income to a full time income and then beyond.
Good tips you gave out here! I am really looking forward to start my first blog about coding with WordPress. I really hope that I will be making (a lot) of money from blogging. I will remember your tips and give my best to become the next big blog!
I’ve written many articles here on ProBlogger on the topic of making money blogging and will link to some suggested further reading on the topic below but let me share a few introductory words on the topic first.
Totally, irrevocably sold on long content! It’s taking a long time to learn everything, I still don’t know what product to offer as I’m bad at getting specific – but my traffic and subscribers are growing. One more step to take along the road.
As a plugin developer, there are many ways you can distribute your plugins. Anyone can submit a free plugin to the WordPress.org plugin directory, as long as they follow the WordPress plugin guidelines. This is a great way to gain experience and build a reputation for yourself as a WordPress plugin developer.
Creating your own t-shirt shop is easy with WordPress. Almost everyone wears t-shirts, so opening up a t-shirt shop is a great way to monetize any kind of blog. Designing t-shirts allows you to be creative and offer something unique to your audience.
I started 10 years ago as a big ticket affiliate marketer. I made money quickly and quit the rat race 55 days later. It made sense to me to avoid creating a product (a tortuous path for a newbie) and let a third party take care of product creation and delivery, not to mention customer service.
Whenever I see somebody’s traffic and income report, I feel very happy by seeing the opportunities bloggers have to earn money from online when it comes to implementing same strategies in my blog may not work for me.
For me this affordable course from Michelle Schroeder-Gardner is the only thing your will need to truly understand the art of making money through blogging. It will show you how you can get up and running extremely quickly and with no affiliate marketing experience needed.
I am a JAGAHB fan and I wanted to express how much I enjoy reading and following your blog. Your blog is so inspirational to us new bloggers. I wish I had found you back in 2013 when you started, but better late than never. 🙂 Your income reports are what drew me to your site and I’ve been impressed every since. I’d never come across or even seen any blog that offered their income information. Most just leave us to guess and wonder if it’s really possible to progress financially. This was a FANTASTIC way to build trust with your future audiences. God Bless, Angela
There are many ways to experiment with growing your blog’s audience that I’ve written in previous blog posts and talked about in podcasts (I’ll share some further reading and listening below) but it is important to enter into all these strategies remembering that you should not just be looking for ‘traffic’ but ‘readers’.
Include keywords in important places. Include them in your blog post title, the large “headers” introducing a new section, the first few sentences of your post, and in links. Change your settings so each blog post’s URL includes the title of the post, not the date it was posted. Try to make these as descriptive as possible to raise your ranking in search results and attract the right audience.
Whether you’re looking to supplement your income with a little extra to pay for a few nice treats or create a blog that will support your lifestyle then you can pretty much make as much money as you like from blogging if you are prepared to put in the hard work.
Wow, this is a great post with tons of data-driven insights that would take me years to figure out on my own. You can earn a good income from blogging, but I’m not sure I want to do it this way myself. I’m more interested in becoming a ghostblogger for businesses.
As I have been inspired by you I’ve created a list with my favourite bloggers and I included you and your blog in it. I hope you don’t mind. The link is here http://passiveincomewise.com/favourite-bloggers/
Forth, If you want to learn more about Elite Blog Academy, you can do so here. It was the first course I took that helped me learn what to write about, grow my blog, figure out my VA biz and create my first course.
Selling services first and then creating a product is an amazing idea which I never read before. I can enumerate several others from your post but don’t want to repeat all the points you mentioned. It will be just like the reproduction of whole post.
Consider hosting your own blog. If you purchase your own domain name, you will need to pay a hosting service monthly or annual fees to keep your website available. The advantage is greater customization, greater control over how to monetize your blog, and direct access to information on blog traffic for analysis.
In fact, I’d go one step further to say it’s necessary for a blogger to really understand his/her audience and to know what keeps them up at night BEFORE coming up with a product idea that delivers more value than it costs.
I have read about being careful to charge enough to cover my expenses, also not to undercut others who must cover expenses, and really, I think that an admirable goal. I don’t want to run someone else’s life, to guarantee their life-long success if I’m the one in control. I just want to publish, successfully, and thereby help as many as possible.
Ghost is a minimalist blogging platform with limited features focused on writing blog posts. It’s available as a hosted platform, and also as a software that you can install and host yourself. We’ll take a look at both options.
* A newbie blogger should not compare their blog with most successful bloggers. Creating useful content and it’s presentation needs to attract the visitors. Therefore, readers will engage with the blog. By doing this, one can drive massive traffic to his/her website which in turn generates huge income.
I absolutely loved this post. Lesson #13: Promote The Crap Out of Your Content Now this is one thing that I know gets results. Sites like Kingged for instance getter done.. I did land here today Via this site where I also commented and kingged this post..
Great post! An eye opener indeed. I have 2 blogs one for sales (small business) and one as a hobby posting lists of anything. I learned a lot from this single post. Thank you, Jon, for sharing your knowledge to us little guys. 🙂
I’m blogger from Indonesia, it’s really helpful to find a blogger like you who dedicated for the “art of traffic”, not many bloggers here (Indonesia) explain it deeply like your blog, though some advice not applicable here.
Here at Smart Blogger, our products cost $9,997, $1,997, and $997, $497, $197, and $47. We started on the expensive side first, and we gradually worked our way down. It’s been much, much more profitable this way.
Instead of a job board, you could create an event calendar where you charge people to advertise their events. This also works well if you already have an established audience, because businesses will be willing to pay to reach your audience.
It can guide future product creation. If one affiliate product sells 10X better than all the others you promote, you might want to think about developing your own version of the product, because you have proof your audience wants it.
Great post guys! I’ve been travel blogging for years, but on a hosted travel blog site. Last June I set up my own blog, but then life happened, I posted infrequently and I didn’t run with it. Now this year, I’ve been actually putting effort into my travel blog since May and I have started getting emails from media companies for sponsored content. I am also doing some freelance travel writing that is proving pretty lucrative. I have another 9 months working in Jamaica, so I’m seeing how far I can get by that time and if I’m able to take the plunge!
Create a digital business that can be promoted through your blog. For example, many of my graphic design clients are people who have found me through my blog. Other ideas are to create an Etsy shop or be a social media guru.
I’ve always had passion for blogging but didn’t exactly know how to go about it. And then the issue of continuity comes in.Having gone through this beautiful and well written article, I am highly motivated. ….Thanks
#11 – Rose Atwater – $4257 in March of 2016 – Rose has a lot of different income sources (always a good idea!). About half of what she earns comes from ad networks, while the rest is a mix of affiliates and sponsored posts.
I am so very glad I found your website and read this post. I am so inexperienced in all this, but I do see that you take a totally different approach to the many others I have read. It is so refreshing. I will go back reread, study and apply.
