I spent about 2 months just reading blogs, learning things I felt I needed before I started my blog, but I’m a little compulsive haha, I could of started sooner but I wanted to be ready. For you, I say do some basic learning of blogging and WordPress then just get to work.
Unlike other “make money online” articles, this is a comprehensive guide on how to make money at home legitimately, using blogging and WordPress. Many of these methods require some investment of time and/or money to get started. As long as you’re willing to put in the effort, you’ll reap the reward.
Jon, amazing article! I would just add to your #15 regarding e-mail subscribers. The number you described is real if you have a legit database of subscribers behind it (don’t know if you take this here for granted).
Thank you so much for taking the time to share a bundle of knowledge. I am very new to blogging. I’ve been compiling my content in WordPress but have not gone live as of yet. Reading your article has helped me tremendously and greatly inspired me as well.
While you need decent traffic to do a direct deal with an advertisers there are ad networks (like Google AdSense) that act as a middleman and enable smaller publishers to run ads on their blogs. This is where many bloggers start (I did too).
Include keywords in important places. Include them in your blog post title, the large “headers” introducing a new section, the first few sentences of your post, and in links. Change your settings so each blog post’s URL includes the title of the post, not the date it was posted. Try to make these as descriptive as possible to raise your ranking in search results and attract the right audience.
Indirect Income – later on in my blogging journey opportunity has come for ‘indirect’ income streams. As my blogs and profile grew as a result of my blogging I was able to sell my services as a speaker and consultant and was offered the opportunity to author a book with the publisher Wiley. Later I was able to start an event for bloggers which also made money. None of this income came directly from the blog – but rather it came ‘because’ of my blog.
Jon, you just rock! I agree that you should be called “his Royal Awesomeness” :). This is the greatest post I ever read about blogging and monetizing a blog. I know some bloggers who are able to make a living 20-30k per year with their blogs but it took them years to build a following and thousands of posts too…
Thanks for the update, Jon. I’ve been blogging for over 11 years. In that time I’ve seen a LOT of changes. In fact, the number one change is change itself. What used to work (Google Adwords, keyword optimization) is actually a way to lose traffic now. I’ve seen eBooks come and go, as well as video marketing, podcasting, and social media marketing. The secret is they all work, for the right message, and the right person. The hard part is, to find the right message for your brand/personality takes a lot of hard work, a lot of experimentation, and months/years of time. Thanks for laying it on the line. Blogging can be a viable occupation, just don’t quit your day job until you’ve found what works for you.

Excellent post, and very encouraging! My coworker knows I love to write and was toying with the idea of starting a blog, so for Christmas he offered to go halvsies on my hosting and domain. That was definitely the push I needed, and I did a ton a of research before finally taking the leap, but I still feel like there is so much I need to get a good handle on!
For example I really launched a blog in the survivalist niche a couple of years ago which I sold for a great profit. The reason I created this blog was that I enjoy being outdoors, hiking and mountain biking etc. I also watch a lot of TV shows about people like Bear Grylls and Ray Mears.
For 2018, I’ve set a revenue goal of $500,000 which might be achievable if the new courses being developed are successful and website traffic continues to grow. I’m also planning to donate a lot of money in 2018 to support Ugandan school fees (my wife works there) and invest in financial literacy initiatives in the United States.
Sounds easy doesn’t it! On some levels the process is simple – but you need to know up front that there’s a lot to each step and below I’m going to give you some pointers on each including some further reading.
That was such an inspiration to read. I can’t believe it took you five years to make your first dollar. Very few people would have that kind of perseverance and stick it through. You deserve all the success.
I mean, of course I’d come up with suitable content for Forbes should they wish to publish me, haha, but honestly we’d be happy with guest posting on even mildly popular travel blogs. The problem up to now, as I mentioned above, is that nobody wants to let us guest post, they want us to pay to do a sponsored post since our blog is attached to our business. If my blog was MexicoMike.com instead of http://blog.geckorockresort.com/ then it wouldn’t be an issue, but as soon as anyone sees the name of our business they incorrectly assume we’re loaded 🙂

Great article here. I’ve been running my healthcare blog for a few months and have just recently started to spend more time on it (learning wordpress, marketing strategies, etc). I’m noway near earning anything from it yet but with effort and time, hope to establish myself as a leading pharmacy blogger.
Sidebar ads are just that — ads you see on the side of a site. Though, they can also appear elsewhere, like at the top or bottom of a page. Basically, you earn money when someone buys a little piece of web space on your blog. I have a some on the right side of my page — see ’em? Sponsorships, as they’re often called, can also include other things — like a tweet about your sponsor’s site to your Twitter followers, for example. I use Passionfruit Ads to handle my sponsorships and have never used anything else. There’s a small, yearly fee to use their service, but I personally think it’s well worth it. I’ve been running sponsors on my blog for almost a year now and have really enjoyed the experience, as it’s not only made me an increasing amount of income, but also connects me to tons of other bloggers each month.
Ironically, I didn’t start this money blog to make money. I started it to share my financial independence story and strategies with anyone who was interested. But when a $5 bill is on the ground, you should always pick it up. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve spent my entire career building websites for other people and Millennial Money is the first website I’ve built for myself. I also really love the challenge of making money online and teaching others how to do it too.
I will quibble on one point though, your comment about BBT getting 13,000 subscribers before launching even though you “had nothing but a coming soon page and an invitation to join our email list.” As I recall, you also had a freakin’ awesome video on that page as well that just made people yearn to give you their email address, even without knowing a thing about BBT. So that didn’t hurt, either. ; )

Not for my sake, but for the sake of all the hobby bloggers I know who keep asking me why their blogs aren’t getting the traffic, attention, or sales they were hoping for, and how in the world can I be building my email list before I even start blogging? Here’s a breakdown of my blogging activity for a typical recent month. Without breaking any confidences by telling you what any specific client pays, here is the amount of blogging I do for paid clients in a month:
Some time a few years ago I was fed up writing for no one online. I wanted my words to be read and ultimately wanted to be paid to write. So I decided to educate myself on the subject. Here’s what I did:
1. Get a squeeze page. 2. Drive traffic through ads 3.Get an autoresponder. 4. Collect leads. 5. Market to the leads. What I don’t see mentioned is “choosing your niche” the niche that you are passionate about.
Despite writing a lot less frequently, due to a solid SEO foundation, my traffic has actually continued to increase. If you haven’t yet checked it out here are my top 67 SEO tips for bloggers (this post has been viewed over 200,000 times!). Execute the fundamentals – they really do work. SEO truly is the compounding interest of digital marketing. I’ve been able to capitalize ranking on the first page of Google for a wide variety of topics including side hustling, house hacking, early retirement, make money blogging, and a bunch of others. But I still haven’t yet hit that inflection point needed to get to 1 million monthly page views. It could happen in 2018. The more frequently you write, the more chances you have to rank, so I need to really ramp up my posting volume to hit the 1 million page views per month goal. So that’s the plan.
