As a result of its increasing complexity, the affiliate marketing world has evolved to include a subset of players which includes specialized third party vendors, affiliate management agencies, and super-affiliates.
Hello Jon, the lessons are detailed and comprehensive. Frankly speaking, I have never read a blog post that carefully like today and I really benefit a lot from it. However, I still have a question regarding to this post, that is, if I am not an expert in any field, what kind of blog (topic for blog) should I start with and how to get enough traffic to my blog? I agree with you that we should not sell ads but should sell our own products or affiliate products via our blog. However, if I cannot teach others something and my blog doesn’t have enough traffic, how can I sell my products or the affiliate products to my readers? Anyhow, I will still focus on your blog and hope I will learn more valuable knowledge through your blog.
It is also possible to sell physical products on your blog and to make money that way. Instead of thinking of it as making money from your blog, however, think of your blog as a content marketing tool that will drive visitors to your business website.
You want to make money, right? Of course you do. Everyone wants – and needs -to make money. So you started a blog since you’ve heard it’s an easy way to make cash, but you’re not quite sure how to actually make money doing it. Or maybe you already have a blog and you’re exploring ways to monetize it.
I am so very glad I found your website and read this post. I am so inexperienced in all this, but I do see that you take a totally different approach to the many others I have read. It is so refreshing. I will go back reread, study and apply.
If you want a custom domain name but don’t want the hassle of running your own site, create a blog on a free hosting service, then pay for a domain name that redirects to your blog. Contact your hosting service if you don’t know how to redirect a page.
One area I never really got into with my survivalist blog and wanted to was Everyday Carry. Most people will have never heard of this concept but it really is an interesting sub-niche with in this niche. Everyday Carry is basically any items you can’t leave the house with.
I have an affiliate question (hopefully you aren’t annoyed at them by now): I want to start a couponing website for a specific niche, that will provide coupons and deals to users at certain stores. What do I do if the store that I really want to promote does not have an affiliate program? Thanks again!
Membership sites can be a big time investment since you must continually create premium content for your paying members. But they can be very lucrative because they are recurring revenue (subscriptions).
#17 – Just a Girl and Her Blog – $14,652 in October of 2015 – Abby shares detailed income reports every single month, and also includes her expenses before mentioning the total. Her income is generated mostly through selling her own digital products, affiliate links, and ad networks. She has managed to substantially increase this total since that income report was published.
If you already have a blog and are interested in monetizing it, you can can get actual real world examples, tips and ideas on how to do this by reading these monthly income reports.  Find out how it’s already being accomplished.
I put in so many hours into my blog, I probably get paid like .5 cents per hour. LOL, but I dont care because I love blogging. Its a great way to get my creative juices out there and help others with investing.
Just like a paid membership , private forums may be created to focus on your target audience . Members can pay an annual/monthly payment to access the online community and communicate with the members of the group .
Matt and I started the Millennial Money Minutes podcast in December 2016, so when I wrote my goals for 2017, we had really just gotten started. But recording 100 episodes felt like a massive goal! But through a consistent recording schedule and the fact that we didn’t have to cancel any recording sessions for the first half of the year, we were able to absolutely crush the goal and record 232 podcast episodes in 2017. That’s an insane amount of talking. Not only that, we were voted one of the top 10 business podcasts on Podbean (coming in at #4!) and have made many other podcast “best of” lists. If you are interested in starting a podcast, definitely check out Podbean – I’ve been super happy with them. If you want to binge listen or search all the episodes click here. But of the 232 episodes we recorded in 2017, here are my top 3 favorite episodes of the year:
Jon, you always deliver! I’ve printed this out so I can have it handy to refer to as I build my audience/blog. I especially liked the survey info and the info on reverse the funnel. I really struggle with what to charge, but seeing your numbers helps. Tons of info here to digest. Thanks!
Sort and sweet: how do I know if I can monetize what I know? I’m a widower…married again with five kids…and the death of my first wife taught me more than I ever wanted to know. Can this turn into money? (I fear your answer…or lack of one.). Peace off.
Whenever I see somebody’s traffic and income report, I feel very happy by seeing the opportunities bloggers have to earn money from online when it comes to implementing same strategies in my blog may not work for me.
I don’t know many bloggers who earn money from their blog alone. By that, I’m referencing mainly to my previous point about thinking bigger than your blog. Most bloggers don’t earn a living just from selling sidebar ads and writing one post everyday. A Beautiful Mess sells books and e-courses. Designlovefest teaches Blogshop, a popular Photoshop workshop for bloggers. Oh Joy! just created a line of products for Target. These are some of the biggest bloggers I know of, yet they are constantly innovating and thinking of new ways to use their blog as a creative starting point and marketing tool. Be an innovator. Branch out.
Congrats Grant! Incredible year, it’s been a ton of fun following along your journey. Really enjoyed the video of your interview as well. Keep up the great work and I’m sure you’ll crush your 2018 goals too!
Hi Matt! It’s difficult to get started monetizing the blog especially when the ad companies dont approve. Just keep making tweaks to your blog and keep sending the requests to join. Eventually they will let you in.
Thanks for sharing! I thought I was the only one who felt this way lol I started getting serious about my blog this past January too (started in July 2013) it’s been an adventure since I started to monetize but I’m having fun and learning a lot. Best of luck to you and your blog 🙂
I was under the impression that I should probably build up a little content before I started putting myself out there via social media and seeking affiliate income, ads, etc, but the more I read, it seems like many successful bloggers try those things out of the gate because (as you said) it all takes a while to build up. What do you think?

Over the past eight years, I’ve had the good fortune to work with some of the smartest bloggers on the planet. I worked with Brian Clark as he built Copyblogger to a multimillion dollar brand. Neil Patel and Hiten Shah also hired me to help them launch the KISSmetrics blog, eventually creating a multimillion dollar SaaS company.
I am a newbie blogger who has no idea where to start with monetizing my blog:( how do you get started with affiliates? I see they seem to provide the most income and while I will certainly ad adsense, I do not want to overload my blog with ads since i want to keep it simple:)
Edge on the side of caution. Although putting a link on your site to another site for money is not illegal, it is against Google’s guidelines, as the person wanting the link is trying to manipulate the SERPs for their own gain.
I agree with your statement “Often times, you can make more money selling to the 2% than you can to the entire 98% combined.” and your following example about selling a $10,000 mentoring program for aspiring writers.
However, using a WordPress ad management plugin can make the process easier. We recommend BuySellAds, a marketplace that matches up website owners and advertisers. There’s also a free BuySellAds WordPress plugin that gives you a simple way to insert the ads on your site with widgets and shortcodes.
You include your affiliate link on your site. You can do this directly in the content or through banner ads. If a reader clicks on your unique link and buys the product you have recommended, you earn a percentage of what she purchased.
I must say, its a great article and enjoyed a lot. There’s so much good information which can be followed and actioned. I was in similar situation before trying to make money online, but couldn’t quite make it. So started slowly and work on the content and SEO. After 4 months I made $2. After this, I was able to make around $50 a month from the same blog. And recently I sold that blog. It happened with me so guys you can make it happen as well. But, please remember if you are looking for big money quick then it is not for you.
I am a JAGAHB fan and I wanted to express how much I enjoy reading and following your blog. Your blog is so inspirational to us new bloggers. I wish I had found you back in 2013 when you started, but better late than never. 🙂 Your income reports are what drew me to your site and I’ve been impressed every since. I’d never come across or even seen any blog that offered their income information. Most just leave us to guess and wonder if it’s really possible to progress financially. This was a FANTASTIC way to build trust with your future audiences. God Bless, Angela
Just started an idea and discovered your info. Very helpful. I am over 50 and a little late in the tech game because of past jobs that required little or no time in front of a computer. I am a very good writer with many a published article to my name over the years BUT now journal writing by hand does little or no good in the world of tech. When I get this blogging thing going, it is gonna explode.
First, start a blog if you haven’t already. Next, focus on building up a solid library of at least 10-20 blog posts. Make sure they are helpful and meaty. Figure out which income streams are natural extensions of your posts. In the meantime, build relationships on social media, in Facebook Groups and wherever your potential readers hang out. Don’t just promote your own stuff, but be a helpful part of the conversation. People will eventually check out what you have to offer.
To me, that’s akin to walking into a business on a Monday morning and demanding to see the manager. I tell him I’d like a job opportunity at his company, and when he asks for my resume, I can’t provide him with one (my blog). And when he asks for my references (social media), I can’t provide that either. Why is he going to listen to me?
Sherman I imagine if I ever told someone that I blog for a living, they would laugh in my face! Ha, I dont blame them. Out of the million bloggers out there, only probably a super small percentage are making that kind of money. That is just a guess though.

You can do the same thing, even if your list is much smaller. If you have 100 subscribers, chances are two of them might be willing to buy premium products or services from you, and those two will often pay you more money than the other 98 combined.
Hi Alexander, thank you for the add! Your list looks wonderful and inspiring! I have a long long long way to go for sure. I think I am probably one of the laziest blogger since I don’t spend much time advertising or networking. I look forward to reading your tips and etc. Thank you!
