Also, in Building the Framework, the mid-range course comes with 20 videos. I do not use WordPress, and so would like to know if those videos are focused on WP setups and themes? Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
#16 – The Busy Budgeter – $12,484 in March of 2016 – This is another income report from Rosemarie. Her income is mostly split down the middle between affiliates and ad networks, with some income from sponsored posts.
Truth is, it would be silly to quit your day job when you are building a blogging income. Your reason for trying to make money with your blog is to have extra money.. Right?  So why leave your job that is giving you and income?
As I have been inspired by you I’ve created a list with my favourite bloggers and I included you and your blog in it. I hope you don’t mind. The link is here http://passiveincomewise.com/favourite-bloggers/
#21 – Smart Passive Income – $166,123 in April of 2016 – Pat Flynn is pretty much the king on online income reports and has some of the most impressive blogging income numbers you’ll find on the web. He lists in detail his income and expenses. The vast majority of that income is from his affiliate relationships. He also earns from niche sites, book sales, and other smaller sources.
Bill hit upon an interesting point (although I disagree with how he expressed it…) Jon, you’re a phenomenal writer, but would you say it’s phenomenal writing alone that got you to where you are today, or your connections with well-known blogs, or both?
The key here is that your exclusive membership has to be more valuable than something your visitors can find for free somewhere else, so be sure you’re developing something of value and worth the price.
Great article. I recently came back into blogging. I hadn’t realized how much I had learnt from my first attempt. Now with the new blog I started about a month ago, I am seeing an increase of traffic everyday which is quite surprising and very exciting. So I have been reading all over how to monetize a blog. Your article is excellent and in-depth. Thank you for sharing I will definitely be using some your advice. Blessings.
As you create the most useful content that you possibly can it is easy to get very insular with your focus and spend most of your time looking at building your blog. Many bloggers have a ‘build it and they will come mentality’ with their blogging but this is a bit of a trap.
Thanks for sharing! I thought I was the only one who felt this way lol I started getting serious about my blog this past January too (started in July 2013) it’s been an adventure since I started to monetize but I’m having fun and learning a lot. Best of luck to you and your blog 🙂
As usual, Jon Morrow, you are the Master of Bloggers. I’m planning my first blog-site and this article, as other ones in SmartBlogger.com, has opened my eyes and expanded my view of what I want to achieve. Thank you so much for sharing you wisdom and knowledge.
Success in every facet of life is based on who you know and not what you know 🙂 The secret is to start connecting with more people, if you build your network wide enough you’ll meet someone who can help you, no matter what it is that you are trying to achieve. Some meet these influential people more quickly by complete luck of the draw, others need to keep plugging along longer. The system works either way, and whether or not it works better for others is irrelevant, all systems in life work better for some than others.
Wow! Trying to learn all the ins and outs and do content, I never knew it was so much work! Been trying to keep up on learning the affiliates and the networks and Google Adsense and social media. Just keep pushing forward. Love to here your earning congrats to you! So awesome! Gives me hope for all my sleepless nights of hard work lol
Wow, I’m so inspired by all of your incomes. I’ve recently quit my profession in Human Resources to pursue my passion for personal finance/career coaching blog. I hope I can be on that list one day! 🙂
Amazing article. I’d like to stress so much on funnel building. You can collect all the emails in the world, however if you do not have a tested system, all those emails will go to waste. Value is so much more important than just selling. If your audience feels they are getting something in return, be sure they will take that next step to buy a product or service from you because they know you and trust your advice…
Time and time again, I have to repeat many (if not all!) these points to them; some learn, some don’t. But the ones who learn will definitely see better results and probably become one of those bloggers who gets paid to do what they love!
In 2017, I grew my email list by about 24,600 people. While both media exposure and organic traffic drove most of my new email list subscribers, I could have done a better job of offering more value for signing-up. I’ve been slacking on creating a welcome sequence which is one of the benefits of using Convertkit for email marketing, or a set of dedicated resources for subscribers. But I am working on both now. Realistically, I think I can get to 1,000 new subscribers per week if I can up my content game, post 3-5 times per week, and increase my writing for CNBC. Building my email list is one of my biggest goals for 2018.
Selling services first and then creating a product is an amazing idea which I never read before. I can enumerate several others from your post but don’t want to repeat all the points you mentioned. It will be just like the reproduction of whole post.
The key with creating content is to make it as useful as possible. Focus upon creating content that changes people’s lives in some way will be the type of content that people will value the most and it will help people to feel like they know, like and trust you – which is really important if you later want to make money from your blog.
So this is really based on when you’re planning to blog about ‘making money online’ I guess… because lesson #10 “Don’t Waste Time on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.” is so not true when you’re blogging about travel, recipes, photography, viral topics, news….. and a whole lot more.:P
#14 – The Busy Budgeter – $9,000 in January of 2016 – Rosemarie’s income is pretty well split down the middle during January between ad networks and affiliates, with around $1,000 coming from sponsored posts.
This is an awesome post. I too found PinchofYum.com some time ago. I’ve built a niche site and I’m in the stage of promoting it so I really needed the information posted here. I’ve researched making money for years but never paired that research with any ACTION. It was not until recently that I started putting things in motion so seeing some of the steps I’m taking being talked about in this topic is quite reassuring. My blog is based around making money online but making it make sense for beginners. https://chuckcandoyoucantoo.com

Hi Alexander, thank you for the add! Your list looks wonderful and inspiring! I have a long long long way to go for sure. I think I am probably one of the laziest blogger since I don’t spend much time advertising or networking. I look forward to reading your tips and etc. Thank you!
This is a wealth of information at my fingertips! I like how you structured the links on this page in such an organized manner. I think that if you want to be a successful blogger you need to create multiple streams of income and not just depend on one to get you to the top.
Jon, amazing article! I would just add to your #15 regarding e-mail subscribers. The number you described is real if you have a legit database of subscribers behind it (don’t know if you take this here for granted).
You can gain readers by posting content that wasn’t previously available online, such as scans of obscure or pre-20th century books and artwork. You should still add your own commentary around this content, however.
Hello Jon, Wow now this article is right on cue, All 20 lesson’s Rock! I got so much out of this one, oh yeh 2 pages of notes HEHE Yes I do take notes, I can ‘t remember all of these goodies after I leave. I think it is a great idea, why not they just may come in handy right.
Create and customize your blog. If you are using a free service, there should be a tutorial to guide you through the initial steps of setting up your blog, as well as a forum for people to ask questions. If you are hosting your own site, you will need someone with web design experience to customize your blog, or you can use software such as WordPress.org to use the same structures available at free services.
In total, it took me about eight years to get here, but in exchange for investing those eight years, I now have enough money to support me until the day I die. Also, every day I get emails from people telling me how I changed their lives for the better.
Founder of Millennial Money. Dubbed “The Millennial Millionaire” by CNBC, Grant went from $2.26 to over $1 million in 5 years, reaching financial independence at age 30. He’s passionate about helping others build wealth and is addicted to Personal Capital.
Thank you for sharing. I am very new to blogging, but I’ve got a lot to say and my family is tired of listening. Hopefully, I can build my blog as you have and some day look at monetization. You are an inspiration 😊
Instead of a job board, you could create an event calendar where you charge people to advertise their events. This also works well if you already have an established audience, because businesses will be willing to pay to reach your audience.

I wish I had enjoyed a positive experience working with you to accomplish these things, but sadly, I just don’t think you get what it takes to make people feel like they’re spending their money with someone who’s interested in them.
Whether you’re looking to supplement your income with a little extra to pay for a few nice treats or create a blog that will support your lifestyle then you can pretty much make as much money as you like from blogging if you are prepared to put in the hard work.
Wow, that’s a great post. I was wondering how all that applies to someone like me that is a creative. My ideal readers are not fellow artists that I could teach something, but people that love their interior and want to brighten it with some colourful and inspiring art. Thank you so much for you response and I will definitely come back and read your blog more often.
I would like to create a tech blog but also would like to be able to develop web apps and tools for the users at the same time, to show case my project and skills, so along with the blog I would need to run code and have access to database. Any host option ?
I’m new at an online website and want to simultaneously pour into a blog as well. Not necessarily looking for income at this point, just so much I want to share but I have no idea of where to start and how to connect with am audience or other bloggers for that matter! Any tips would be super helpful! Thanks and congratulations!
Several years ago I realized bloggers were making money. In some cases, they were making good money! And many of them seemed like regular people, just like me. How exactly were they doing it? And could I make money blogging too?
Jaime, great article that you have posted on how to make money with blogging. Lots of informative concepts which a lot of other blogs would have over complicated but you have made it so simple that I find it so easy to read and take notes. I like it how you have broken it down to steps to follow which is great for the first time blogger just getting started in what appears to be an Internet jungle.
In the above graph, “value” refers to how much the customer values what you’re promising them, not your own personal value. For instance, I personally think my guacamole is worth $10,000 a bowl, but none of my friends agree with me, so I’m forced to give it to them for free. Bastards.

Trust continues to be a major issue on the World Wide Web between bloggers and readers. Readers want to see bloggers posting lots and lots of meaningful content to their sites on a daily basis and giving them something to think about. It’s relatively easy for a person to post once a week and expect readers to be converted into repeat buyers when that’s certainly not the case toward being a successful and profitable blogger. Creating quality content and putting people first puts a full-time or part-time blogger in the front seat to earning honest and passive incomes from affiliate marketing.
I now believe financial report of your site is among its propellers. Simply put, it motivates ametuers to dare. Someone somewhere feels like to start something too. Something of their own and be proud of. And that someone is ME!
Another option to make money is to sell memberships to exclusive corners of your website. For instance, a career blog might charge $10 per month for users to gain access to their job board. A startup business blog might sell memberships to their forums where people can get personalized advice about their business.
I don’t know many bloggers who earn money from their blog alone. By that, I’m referencing mainly to my previous point about thinking bigger than your blog. Most bloggers don’t earn a living just from selling sidebar ads and writing one post everyday. A Beautiful Mess sells books and e-courses. Designlovefest teaches Blogshop, a popular Photoshop workshop for bloggers. Oh Joy! just created a line of products for Target. These are some of the biggest bloggers I know of, yet they are constantly innovating and thinking of new ways to use their blog as a creative starting point and marketing tool. Be an innovator. Branch out.
Ironically, I didn’t start this money blog to make money. I started it to share my financial independence story and strategies with anyone who was interested. But when a $5 bill is on the ground, you should always pick it up. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve spent my entire career building websites for other people and Millennial Money is the first website I’ve built for myself. I also really love the challenge of making money online and teaching others how to do it too.
Hey Lori. You can read my post here on how I blog part time while working a full time job. It was a little bit crazy for sure, but it’s paid off. And don’t worry – I am not a writer either and you definitely don’t have to be 🙂
I think now that I have finally started to have a better understanding of how to provide value. My new challenge is learning how to differentiate when I’m giving “too much” value, in the case where I should have just packaged up the content and created a product.
Hi LaToya! When I started out, I literally just started writing. I wasn’t too worried about an audience – I just focused on writing consistently, figuring out my style, etc. If you need help with getting a blog, I have a free ebook you can download!
To monetize your WordPress.com site, you must purchase a Premium or Business plan. This upgrades you to an entrepreneurial level and enables you to monetize your blog and earn money through advertisements.
Just wanted to say that I’ve done the guestblogging.com course and found it to be awesome. I can recommend it highly. It’s excellent to improve your writing skills and your networking skills – the latter invaluable to me as a beginning blogger.
There’s a rumor floating around that I’ve made each of those mistakes on multiple occasions. Some people also say I have to be repeatedly reminded about the graph above, lest I slip up and nearly bankrupt the company (again).
That’s just amazing. I never thought there can be a number of options to earn from blogs. I always thought serving ads is the only way. Thanks a lot for changing my mind set. Keep sharing informative articles.
Don’t expect it to come quickly. I have worked pretty tirelessly on my blog and genuinely love blogging, but realistically, only make 20-25% of my income from blogging (13 months later). It takes time and an awful lot of work. Don’t feel bad if it takes a year or two to start seeing any momentum.
Now, starting a blog is easy but in order to be able to successfully monetize the blog, you need to establish the blog. In this guide, I have also covered the topics that help you establish your blog so you can monetize it.
As a plugin developer, there are many ways you can distribute your plugins. Anyone can submit a free plugin to the WordPress.org plugin directory, as long as they follow the WordPress plugin guidelines. This is a great way to gain experience and build a reputation for yourself as a WordPress plugin developer.
It’s not because they were stupid. They didn’t get one of my emails and say, “Oh, look honey, this is a fabulous opportunity to throw our money away. Let’s give this good-looking fellow $10,000 just for the hell of it.”
I can’t imagine that it’s worth the payoff to actually pay $25-100 per guest post. I mean, sure, if Conde Nast would let us write for them for a hundred bucks that would be one thing, but I don’t think it’s worth it to pay to guest post on a middling travel blog.
Nice explanations there. With fresh new blog to promote, how I could know which country to choose for ads. I would like to start campaign in make money online niche with Bing ads but what Country would be more interested?

I echo the sentiments posted before me… this was extremely helpful in the quest to begin my own blog for profit. It is well written, informative, and full of links to more material. Thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge with all of us! Hopefully I can build a brand that is this helpful to others!
Man 100k per month from just a single blog is absolutely Awesome. You are really an All-In-One Internet guider. I am starting out with my new blog, we are at setup stage, we are preparing free courses for email optins.
You deducted $5 for Google as a blog expense. But didn’t you mention in your article that you also pay for your domain and a wordpress website? Do you still pay for those, and if so, how much per month? I was wanting to start blogging, but the whole decision on going with a free site or paying for one still has me in limbo. Also, do you have a domain or website you recommend? Thanks.

What is CPC? CPC stands for “cost per click.” By displaying CPC ads with Google Adsense, you receive a set fee every time an ad on your website is clicked by a visitor. The cost per click is set by the advertiser. (This is in contrast to CPM ads, where you’re paid for ad views instead of clicks. CPM means “cost per thousand impressions,” where M is the roman numeral for 1,000.)
There are so many options for affiliate links, but I feel like I am just skimming the service and there is so much I don’t know. I started by looking into products and services I use and then find out if they have an affiliate program I could join! Some of the companies offer programs in their own; some are part of a big network. I think I am going to break this down in a blog post this week. Thank you for asking!
In total, more than 1.5 million people visited the website from around the world and of the 10 blog goals that I set for 2017  I was able to accomplish 7 of them, including making $401,681 in blog income from the platform. I also rejected a seven-figure offer to buy the website in July because I’m still just getting started with my personal mission, which is to teach as many people as possible how to make more money and reach financial independence. My goal has never been to sell the blog for millions of dollars.
Selling your professional services. I used to have great success as a web designer, and graphic but the industry has changed and people are doing their own small business sites. Yes, they all look the same but the clients don’t know the difference. Logos? People are going to fivrr.

#13 – L Bee and the Moneytree – $7400 in April of 2016 – Lauren earns much of her blogging income from affiliates and sponsored campaigns. She also includes her staff writing income in this total, which is almost $3,000.

The most conventional (and least profitable) method is selling advertising, where you allow companies to promote their products and services to your audience in exchange for a fee. You can also form partnerships with other companies, promoting their products and services and earning a commission each time one of your readers purchases. This is called “affiliate marketing.”
I would like to create a tech blog but also would like to be able to develop web apps and tools for the users at the same time, to show case my project and skills, so along with the blog I would need to run code and have access to database. Any host option ?
I’ve found a few that you might not have seen yet, so I’d love to help you out any way I can. You can check out my Complete List of Bloggers Who Share Income Reports at http://onlineincomereport.com/complete-list/
As I write this, I am getting ready to fly to New York to be interviewed on ABC Nightline which gets like 1.5 million viewers (freaking out a little bit). I also have two other TV interviews confirmed so far in just January. But in 2017, I made my first appearance on WGN News in Chicago and it was so much fun. I also learned (the hard way) that you should always wear makeup on TV simply to reduce the glare on your face from all the lights. Here’s my first time on TV for Millennial Money with my shiny forehead. It was a ton of fun though.
WordPress also have a variety of plugins that make it easy to put social sharing buttons on your blog posts. Some people like to limit the number of plugins they use on their WordPress blog because it can slow the blog down and it can open your blog up to more attacks, butt a social sharing plugin is one that should have high priority if you do choose to use plugins.
Any who I just wanted to say your income report is expiring and I only hope by 6 months to have made something. As it stands now with my 200 pageviews I have earned about a $1.00, but I am proud of that dollar.
I’ve always had passion for blogging but didn’t exactly know how to go about it. And then the issue of continuity comes in.Having gone through this beautiful and well written article, I am highly motivated. ….Thanks
The next most profitable strategy would have been to partner with other companies, collecting a commission on each sale as an affiliate. We never tested it, but I would guess we would’ve made somewhere around $25,000 per month on the spots — 60% more than advertisers would have paid.
Create a digital business that can be promoted through your blog. For example, many of my graphic design clients are people who have found me through my blog. Other ideas are to create an Etsy shop or be a social media guru.
Solid numbers about blogging incomes are hard to come by. For example, in the US, the Bureau of Labor Statistics lump bloggers in the very broad category of “Writers and Authors” which has a median income of $61,240 per year. It’s not an accurate measure since there are vastly different occupations included in that category. Information from small surveys and anecdotal evidence can also be found online, but much of it is outdated or taken from tiny sample sizes.
