This is another favorite income stream of mine. My first digital product was my ebook Tell Your Time: How to Manage Your Schedule So You Can Live Free which still sells every month. Another digital product of mine is the Knowtbook, a form of premium content.
It all depends where the most people are that will be interested in your site / niche / product. I target ads in countries such as UK, USA, Canada and India, only because there are vast numbers of English speakers there with enough disposable income to want to buy through my sites.
Thanks Gustavo. Glad it’s been of great help to you. You’re right, there’s a lot of shit out there that is misleading and ultimately want to take money from newbies in exchange for misinformation and crap services/products. All the best.
John..Love your writing and your story about you and your mom’s insatiable perseverance. I have been reading your site a lot lately (you probably already know that) and love the wisdom you are passing on. I am constantly seeking new ideas and insights and glad I found the site. Keep up the good work and your entertaining writing style!
Blogging can be a great source of income. The only regret we have about starting this travel blog is not doing it earlier. We love the job. We love sharing our travel experiences and knowledge with hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
In return for a reader’s email address, I would give away a free 7 day email course via email. About 85% of the time, that reader would stick around after the mini course to check out my new articles and updates.
While you need decent traffic to do a direct deal with an advertisers there are ad networks (like Google AdSense) that act as a middleman and enable smaller publishers to run ads on their blogs. This is where many bloggers start (I did too).
#6 – Embracing Simple – $630 in August of 2015 – I have Christina at Embracing Simple linked above as well with an older report when she wasn’t making as much. It’s inspiring and motivating to see how quickly someone can way more than double their blogging income when they try. It looks like most of this money came from affiliate links.
These tips are awesome. Your guide for 0 to $100k is great and contains lots of great deals. All these points are pretty important for bloggers to start his journey as a professional blogger. And you are right most of the world thinks bloggers are fools? But we are fools for changing the world.
My understanding is that you have to subscribe/pay for the business version of Word Press in order to use any of the monetizing functions. I think you should clearly state this in this article at the beginning. I think there is a degree of bait and switch here if people are just signing up for the free subscription and then finding out they have to pay for a subscription to make money. I am ok with that, it just needs to be stated up front everywhere.
When I started my blog a little over a year ago, I didn’t really know that it was possible to earn any kind of dough from running a website. I’d heard of bloggers, of course, but they might as well have been mythical creatures of the new millennium. I didn’t know any steadfast bloggers, and certainly none that were making cash from their hobby. But as I began to dip my toes deep into Blogland, I realized that the possibilities were nearly limitless. With hard work and some research, I knew that blogging was a gateway and tool to reach many other things. One of those things simply being, income. Since I was absolutely clueless about all of this when I first started, I thought it might be helpful for you all if I shared some of the ways I’ve found for how to earn money as a blogger.
I don’t know many bloggers who earn money from their blog alone. By that, I’m referencing mainly to my previous point about thinking bigger than your blog. Most bloggers don’t earn a living just from selling sidebar ads and writing one post everyday. A Beautiful Mess sells books and e-courses. Designlovefest teaches Blogshop, a popular Photoshop workshop for bloggers. Oh Joy! just created a line of products for Target. These are some of the biggest bloggers I know of, yet they are constantly innovating and thinking of new ways to use their blog as a creative starting point and marketing tool. Be an innovator. Branch out.
My response: you’re 98% right. Unless you’re selling exclusively to multimillionaires, the vast majority of your customer base won’t be able to afford premium products, but what’s interesting is it doesn’t matter. Often, you can make more money selling to the 2% than you can to the entire 98% combined.

Simple, Search engines, at least the first scan of a page do not scan all the content. By showing the pages latest comments first, it make those comments more likely to be read by the search engine’s spiders. This will register as always fresh content and fresh engagement – which is good for SEO.
You can approach companies on your own to ask about doing paid reviews. There are also websites like PayPerPost and SponsoredReviews that can help to connect you with businesses who may be interested.
This is the first time I read the honest and so detail report on the blogging income. Love it since its so inspirational. Thank you for being so transparent with what you are doing. Just started my blog for my new year goal. You are one of my mentor in blogging business. Thank you again
Granted, it’s not really a fair comparison. With your own products, you have to consider the cost of development, support, and other miscellaneous expenses, but even factoring those in, advertising our products was still more profitable by far.
My dad and I invest in multi-family real estate. Through blogging, I’m hoping to chronicle our experiences and challenges, and provide tips to people who might be interested. Making money doing this would be awesome.
I stumbled upon your blog post through Pinterest and am so glad that I did! You seem like a blogger I would love to read and learn from! As a newbie, it’s so exciting to see other newer bloggers that are still in the earlier (but still very successful) stages of their careers because you seem so down to Earth and real! I can’t wait to hear more from you and to learn more about you and your blog!
The more subscribers you get, the more money you make. Granted, your relationship with your subscribers and the quality of your products or services and dozens of other factors still matter, but to drive revenue, focus on email list growth. To make money blogging, it’s absolutely essential.
So this is really based on when you’re planning to blog about ‘making money online’ I guess… because lesson #10 “Don’t Waste Time on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc.” is so not true when you’re blogging about travel, recipes, photography, viral topics, news….. and a whole lot more.:P
In January 2015, I bought my blog and decided to get serious and treat it more like a business. I really wanted to make blogging a side hustle that earned me money! While I loved the idea of blogging as a hobby, I really wanted to earn income from it!
A paid event calendar is a good monetization method for local or industry-specific websites. You might choose to advertise events in your local city, conferences in a certain industry, or even webinars or live streaming events.
Affiliate marketing is a kind of performance-based marketing. With this form of marketing, business owners reward affiliates for each customer brought to the company through the affiliate’s independent advertising endeavors. There are four key players in affiliate marketing:
Don’t be fooled by the pictures of expensive cars, mansions, or working from beach. Every single one of those are scams, and you will waste your time and money paying for any courses or training that you buy from those guys.
Now I am here to ask you to include my new blog in your Blog Income Report list. I created my new website last week however my income report is about my Niche Site. Please, could you include it to the list?
It allows you to quickly insert links into posts, create branded links, auto-replace keywords into links, and even see how each link is performing on your site. You can see our guide on how to add affiliate links in WordPress with ThirstyAffiliates for more info.
Alrighty. Just started a new blog this week and this post is SO valuable. My first goal is growing my list to 1,000, but you’ve got me thinking about viable products and a webinar. Thanks for sharing your expertise and experience!
As a new(ish) blogger, it’s a little intimidating to see such a great post, yet realize it kinda goes against SO much you’ve learned thus far. At this point, I seriously feel like a deer in the headlights. But I have a question…
Congrats on making some money! I’m terrible about affiliate stuff, so the money I make is often from cash back site referrals. (Mr. Rebates gives you an amount equal to 20% of your referrals’ rebates. No time limit.)
In other words, Jon is an incredible writer, communicator, and hard worker–no question. But you’re in the business of helping other people make money. You’re not, by contrast, a travel blogger. You’re not, by contrast, helping to teach people how to buy their first pet. You’re not, by contrast, an entertainment blogger writing about Rihanna and “True Detective.”
Hi Abby,i read your post about the last income report and want to say yes may be you’re right and it’s time for you to change your way i’ m not gonna tell you stop publishing your next income report is right or wrong it’s totally up to you but at least i wanna say this type of post whenever comes with reality can inspire and motivate many of readers.
Wow, that’s a great post. I was wondering how all that applies to someone like me that is a creative. My ideal readers are not fellow artists that I could teach something, but people that love their interior and want to brighten it with some colourful and inspiring art. Thank you so much for you response and I will definitely come back and read your blog more often.
This is really a great idea to share your blogging success & failures at one place and more over helping everyone by showing what is working & what is not. I love to read such income reports to stay motivated.
Making money blogging can take a lot of persistence, but it can pay off in the long-run if youre starting out from scratch. Just remember that you dont have to use all of these money-making avenues at once. Consider what other people in your industry are doing, and start from there.
Choose affiliate products your readers will buy. This seems obvious, but it bears thinking about. If you write a cooking blog, recommend home kitchen tools, not expensive equipment for professional chefs. Consider what someone who is a fan of your topic would purchase, not just what active practitioners will.
It’s not because they were stupid. They didn’t get one of my emails and say, “Oh, look honey, this is a fabulous opportunity to throw our money away. Let’s give this good-looking fellow $10,000 just for the hell of it.”
Yes the Ultimate List is really impressive. Thanks for checking it out. I checked your blog and dont see any income reports. Send me a contact message with more info if you have it. $200 per month on google adsense is very impressive. Congrats on that!
Founder of Millennial Money. Dubbed “The Millennial Millionaire” by CNBC, Grant went from $2.26 to over $1 million in 5 years, reaching financial independence at age 30. He’s passionate about helping others build wealth and is addicted to Personal Capital.
Hey Johnny, Number 8 is amazing are you kidding! Keep up the great work bud. You are one of the bloggers that inspire me. Its amazing you have made such a significant impact in your blogging income in just one year!
I have a blog that uses a wordpress theme, and blue host hosts my domain name. However, I don’t really understand what a platform is and I don’t know what my platform is. I am planning to start a new food blog with a different focus and use wordpress.org (whatever that actually means.) Does wordpress.org help you with setting up and explaining whether or not they are your platform? I am a granny (79 to be exact.) I have a three year old cooking blog that never gets visitors except for family and friends. I would like to do better with my blog, but I don’t even understand the idea of platform. Can you give me some advice as to how to proceed?
Selling services first and then creating a product is an amazing idea which I never read before. I can enumerate several others from your post but don’t want to repeat all the points you mentioned. It will be just like the reproduction of whole post.
Some blogs are focused on getting paid to provide links to news articles, company stores, or other third party websites. The most financially successful of these range from the Drudge, a blog composed almost entirely of conservative-leaning news links, to Smashing Magazine, a site that provides advice and product reviews to help software developers.
I just launched my blog a week ago, UnderstandingIsLoving.com. I get like no views a day hahaha but after reading this and a couple other pro-blog tips, I have my marching orders. I hope you’ll stop by and tell me what you think! As soon as I can afford to I’ll change the theme.
Yeah I am very familiar with pinch of yum and used to have them on here but to be honest, I got tired of calculating their net profit each month. For some reason, they list all their income and expenses but dont calculate the net and they have a lot of items for both. It’s really just me being lazy!! 😐
