WOW Jon! great post, Only read it quickly so I will go over it again later! Lesson 9 is the eye opener! I find it really difficult to give away great content that I have just spent hours writing, but as you say, it’s got to be done!!
Anyone wanting to create a blog dedicated to blogging, Medium is the way to go. I’ve maintained a WordPress blog for ten years now and the only thing stopping me from migrating everything over is that you can’t migrate comments.
When an up-and-coming band auditions to be an opening act, do you think the more famous band cares where they have played? Not really. All they care about is the strength of the audition. If the up-and-coming band is good, they get the gig. If they suck, it doesn’t matter where they played or how good everyone else says they are, they get a polite no.
Hey Kenzie!! Aww, you’re so nice! If you’re ever in the Nashville area, let me know 🙂 Blogging has totally changed my life, but it took some work to get where I am now (I’m on maybe my 12th income report?) But I am totally open and share the good and the bad when it comes to blogging, so hopefully others find it useful. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment 🙂
As with freelancing, there is no startup investment. You can start offering consulting services on your existing blog. All you need is to create a page with a form so users can request more information.
The way I do it is I find all the big players in my niche and put their URL into SEMrush to see what they rank for and what content does best for them in terms of traffic and keyword rankings. This will then give me some ideas on content and how to enter that niche and try to gain some of that traffic.
Is there a hosting service where you can actually pay BY THE MONTH? I get that you have a money back guarantee, but that’s still a lot of money for me to shell out for something that I’m just starting out. If you are looking to blog to hopefully help generate income, then it seems natural to me for a host to let someone start out slowly.
I know enough about SEO to probably be wrong about a lot of it. I could probably write a series of articles on SEO tactics I have learned over the years but as I am not an expert I’ll point you in the right direction to some good articles on the subject.
Hey Sumalee! It doesn’t hurt to start early – just make sure you have some great content published first so readers who are coming from social media sites can see what you have to offer and will want to come back and read more 🙂 And if you want to monetize – go for it! It took me some time to build up – mostly because I had no clue what I was doing – so the earlier you can get started, the better!
I am a newbie blogger who has no idea where to start with monetizing my blog:( how do you get started with affiliates? I see they seem to provide the most income and while I will certainly ad adsense, I do not want to overload my blog with ads since i want to keep it simple:)
Blogging can be a great source of income. The only regret we have about starting this travel blog is not doing it earlier. We love the job. We love sharing our travel experiences and knowledge with hundreds of thousands of people around the world.
Yes, this isn’t that moonshot way of earning that so many are dreaming of, where you monetize your own blog and make six figures on autopilot. This is an everyday, working-class sort of way to earn from blogging. Simply helping publications and companies communicate powerfully with their readers and customers.
Our blog actually covers travel tips and insights into expat life along the Oaxacan coast of Mexico, so I am not sure that those sites would be the target audience for our blog’s content even if they were more accessible, which clearly they aren’t.
In 2002 I began to blog one day on impulse after seeing another blog and being fascinated by the medium. I had no idea at the time that what I was doing would ultimately lead to a complete change in my career path and end up being something I’d make a full time income from in several years later.
In other words, Jon is an incredible writer, communicator, and hard worker–no question. But you’re in the business of helping other people make money. You’re not, by contrast, a travel blogger. You’re not, by contrast, helping to teach people how to buy their first pet. You’re not, by contrast, an entertainment blogger writing about Rihanna and “True Detective.”
Haha yeah it takes time to finally figure out, implement and start making a profit. I spent countless hours reading up and was able to make money pretty fast but by all means, its not much at all. Im definitely getting enough to pay for the hosting and all that but i wish I could get more. 😉
This list is perfect for new bloggers. You get to see all the cool ways the other more experienced bloggers are already utilizing. I know that all the ways I make blog income has been learned from what these other people are doing. Its truly inspiring!
I actually earned a little bit more than this during the month of March, but some of the affiliate sales are not paid out until the following month. Because of this, I have decided to only report income when I actually receive payment.
I just launched my blog a week ago, UnderstandingIsLoving.com. I get like no views a day hahaha but after reading this and a couple other pro-blog tips, I have my marching orders. I hope you’ll stop by and tell me what you think! As soon as I can afford to I’ll change the theme.
The truth is you are better to put out 5 – 10 smaller products around one big product that way if your goal is to make $5,000 a month, it will be easier to make $500 to $1,000 per product then it would be to make the full $5,000 from one product.
Display ads are nice when they are contextually relevant, but they can get really random and clutter up the experience. Also – a quick note: If you run a display ad network on your website, it can undercut your affiliate revenue since most affiliate commissions are based on last-click attribution, not first-click. So, for example, if someone clicks on your affiliate link, but then comes back to your website and gets served a re-marketing display ad from your affiliate and they click on it, you might not get the affiliate commission (since they clicked on a re-marketing ad for the brand last!). I realized I was losing a lot of affiliate commissions this way, so be careful if you have run display ads and have affiliates.
Yep its crazy that you can actually make a really good living just on blogging and making money online. I love that! I am using the promax theme on my site and I think it was $18 for the full version. Let me know how your facebook ads work after you do it.
However, using a WordPress ad management plugin can make the process easier. We recommend BuySellAds, a marketplace that matches up website owners and advertisers. There’s also a free BuySellAds WordPress plugin that gives you a simple way to insert the ads on your site with widgets and shortcodes.
As your blog grows, you may want to change the look of your site and add more features for your growing audience. That means it’s important to choose a blogging platform that’s flexible, with room to grow.
Whenever I see somebody’s traffic and income report, I feel very happy by seeing the opportunities bloggers have to earn money from online when it comes to implementing same strategies in my blog may not work for me.
I need some help, I see that you said that building a site that is based on a niche is much more profitable. I have one question, how about a site that isn’t based on a niche. I often blog about many things. Sometimes, they’re not related to each other at all. In terms of SEO, will it have any massive negative impact? Thanks in advance.

Also, I think allowing comments on your blog makes you approachable and builds a community. Plus, if you solely build your community on social media networks, what happens when they disappear? You never know, it could happen.
Well so far Misha my turnkey purchases have been amazing but I havent held them long enough to see any damage yet. So only time will tell but what I can tell you is that I am crazy picky and selective about what properties I buy to minimize risk. I flew out once and met tons of people that do “everything” for you and now that I trust them, I don’t plan on flying out there anymore unless its some grave circumstance or if I start working with a new turnkey provider.
I started my first ever blog by writing on a consistent schedule about myself, my hobbies and interests. People found me via Google, Facebook, social media and my readership gradually grew over time to where it is today.
This was a win-win! First, I was able to share my experience and give an honest review of something I was using. Second, a reader trusted my opinion and used my link to make a purchase. The reader was able to get the item for the standard price and I was able to earn a commission. How exciting!
Great post, thanks for sharing. Couldn’t agree more as Blue Host with WordPress Blogging is an Excellent way to generate a Passive Income Online. Love the use of Plugins with WordPress, makes Search Engine Optimization SO Much Easier.
It’s so refreshing to see someone write about the times that they were making only $60 per month, since most links I find are about how to make thousands. That seems pretty out of reach when you’re just starting out.
2) And second, you mentioned that you would recommend people do guest blogging, and not even post their first blog entry until they have 10,000 subscribers. You then said you would completely dismiss social media for now (which goes against what someone like Gary Vaynerchuk thinks, but that’s fine–nothing wrong with differing opinions).
