Thanks for reaching out. Congrats on the awesome first month. Do you have a link that will show all your income reports? Like a category link or something? If so, send me that. It prevents me from having to update individual links each month.
Affiliate marketing is a kind of performance-based marketing. With this form of marketing, business owners reward affiliates for each customer brought to the company through the affiliate’s independent advertising endeavors. There are four key players in affiliate marketing:
Honestly speaking, I haven’t really started thinking of earning money from my blog as that wasn’t the aim when I started it, but your post surely motivated me to think in that direction for a change. I guess you need to make a start somewhere, and if you want to do that, you need to lessen down or cut-off a lot of other things you do too.
There are thousands of articles and podcast episodes on ProBlogger about how to create content. See our latest stuff in the content category on our blog and on the podcast. Also check out some of these popular articles on different aspects of creating content.
Some of the most financially successful blogs provide news on a specific topic or targeted to a particular demographic. Mashable, a blog focused primarily on social media news, was founded by a teenager in 2005 and now attracts millions of dollars in investment funding.
Hi Pamm! When I started blogging, I didn’t worry too much about people reading it lol. It took me some time to figure out my style of writing and what I want to write about – and I’m not a writer! Trust me, write about what YOU want to write about and your audience will come.
Because of the similarity in names, beginners often start with WordPress.com thinking they are getting the powerful WordPress.org software. After seeing the limitations, users often end up switching from WordPress.com to WordPress.org to have more features and control over their website.
Spot-on post though, I’m just genuinely curious…in your experience, have you found it more difficult for people to break into guest blogging since it’s so pervasive among the IM crowd? Is it more-so a matter of who you know versus what you know?
Everyone has a skill that businesses need and offering your time and expertise is a great way to make an income from your blog. Services have the highest profit margins as you are effectively selling your time and not a physical product – however your income is limited to the number of hours you are available for work.
I’m impressed about the depth of insight you seem to command in this area. It is true there are lots of sites that means opposite of what they say or write but yours is different. Keep on doing a good job out there.
I have read many how to make money from your blogs and such articles and online posts…. Never felt they were complete or were honest. Your this entire series of posts on blogging A to Z is like a bible for aspiring and seasoned bloggers. Keep up the good work and god bless you!
In 2002 I began to blog one day on impulse after seeing another blog and being fascinated by the medium. I had no idea at the time that what I was doing would ultimately lead to a complete change in my career path and end up being something I’d make a full time income from in several years later.
Companies want to get their product in front of potential customers. They may be interested in advertising on your blog if your readers are their ideal customers. Here are ways to incorporate advertising into your blog:

PS: my answer to this question is always… “the better question is… how can my blog help me build a profitable business?” Most of the profits from blogging are not made on your blog, but that’s okay. I don’t believe blogging about making money per se, but about branding yourself and positioning yourself within your niche market as an authority and leader. Once that is established, there are so many ways to move people into your money making enterprises. Email marketing, as you pointed out, is one of the best ways to do this. Sending people to your membership sites, services, info products and coaching programs are all great things to route people into as well.
I’ve just begun my passive income journey and one of my aims is to get added to this site as it’s so useful and inspirational. Unfortunately I’ve started rather poorly as the ad network and affiliate links scheme I was hoping to join refused my application. My fault, but bit of a shock.
Include keywords in important places. Include them in your blog post title, the large “headers” introducing a new section, the first few sentences of your post, and in links. Change your settings so each blog post’s URL includes the title of the post, not the date it was posted. Try to make these as descriptive as possible to raise your ranking in search results and attract the right audience.
I started publishing my reports here – just recapped 2015 and plan to make monthly reports going forward. https://www.earnmoneyblogging.net/affiliate-marketing-income-reports-amazon-affiliate-earnings-for-2015-graphic/
This is complete motivation for me to keep on blogging and not giving up. Thanks for taking the time to put this list together. I know it takes some time searching Google for these folks updated income reports.
Nice guide for making money via blogging. Mostly people use adsense and affiliate networks but sponsored posts are good option too and as you said above declare them as a sponsored post so that everything goes well, i like that part that is good for users and search engines also like that you do advertising but mention it.
#17 – Just a Girl and Her Blog – $14,652 in October of 2015 – Abby shares detailed income reports every single month, and also includes her expenses before mentioning the total. Her income is generated mostly through selling her own digital products, affiliate links, and ad networks. She has managed to substantially increase this total since that income report was published.
OK – the first four steps of starting a blog, creating content, finding readers and building engagement with those readers are important foundations that you really do need to get in place before you’ll be able to build long term income for your blog.
I can’t imagine that it’s worth the payoff to actually pay $25-100 per guest post. I mean, sure, if Conde Nast would let us write for them for a hundred bucks that would be one thing, but I don’t think it’s worth it to pay to guest post on a middling travel blog.
I thought it would be enlightening to give those interested in earning from blog-writing fees a look at what it takes to earn a decent living as a paid blogger. The short answer is: Be able to write a lot of very powerful, well-linked, properly formatted, well-researched, short blogs. Never run out of story ideas.
Reddit – ads appear on the top of the various pages. They are obviously ads so users don’t feel tricked into clicking on them. When people choose to select an ad they usually know it. So there is little chance of upsetting customers this way.
Whether you’re looking to supplement your income with a little extra to pay for a few nice treats or create a blog that will support your lifestyle then you can pretty much make as much money as you like from blogging if you are prepared to put in the hard work.
As I have been inspired by you I’ve created a list with my favourite bloggers and I included you and your blog in it. I hope you don’t mind. The link is here http://passiveincomewise.com/favourite-bloggers/
If you need a little help I would highly recommend you check out my article How to Start a Blog in which I run through the steps you need to take to get up and running. It’s really not as hard as you might think!
I started 10 years ago as a big ticket affiliate marketer. I made money quickly and quit the rat race 55 days later. It made sense to me to avoid creating a product (a tortuous path for a newbie) and let a third party take care of product creation and delivery, not to mention customer service.
Affiliate marketing is one of my favorite and most profitable income streams. You can highlight products or services you use and love without having to do the work of creating or maintaining that product yourself. Awesome post to make money via blogging in 2016. As today many bloggers are struggling to make money and choosing the right path to make money. So I say monetization is not the right way to make money instead use alternative methods you have already described above. So thank you.
make money with blog
A lot of bloggers launch a cheap e-book as their first product, and then they get frustrated when they don’t make much money. Here’s why: the real profit is at the end of the funnel, not the beginning.
Another option for creating a paid membership site is to create private forums that users must pay to get access to. Forums are a great way for your audience to get one-on-one advice from you. Other members of the community can also interact and help each other out.
There are so many options for affiliate links, but I feel like I am just skimming the service and there is so much I don’t know. I started by looking into products and services I use and then find out if they have an affiliate program I could join! Some of the companies offer programs in their own; some are part of a big network. I think I am going to break this down in a blog post this week. Thank you for asking!
If you can’t find any popular blogs related to your topic, you probably went too niche. People interested in a topic will often visit several related blogs, and each blogger can link to the other to direct more traffic to each site.
Display ads are nice when they are contextually relevant, but they can get really random and clutter up the experience. Also – a quick note: If you run a display ad network on your website, it can undercut your affiliate revenue since most affiliate commissions are based on last-click attribution, not first-click. So, for example, if someone clicks on your affiliate link, but then comes back to your website and gets served a re-marketing display ad from your affiliate and they click on it, you might not get the affiliate commission (since they clicked on a re-marketing ad for the brand last!). I realized I was losing a lot of affiliate commissions this way, so be careful if you have run display ads and have affiliates.
This goes against the grain of 90% of what I’ve learned from the”experts” in the last 9 months of blogging. But man it feels right. I’m so worried about short term gains that I’m not building a long term foundation. I’m thinking so small! These lessons are profound, Jon. Thanks!
Excellent breakdown of the real deal man. Thanks for dispelling many of the get-rich-quick crap circulating about how to use blogging as a revenue stream. At MFJLabs we use blogging to augment our SEO efforts for client sites. Works nicely.
You can gain readers by posting content that wasn’t previously available online, such as scans of obscure or pre-20th century books and artwork. You should still add your own commentary around this content, however.
Water.org is an international nonprofit organization that has positively transformed millions of lives around the world through access to safe water and sanitation. Founded by Gary White and Matt Damon, Water.org pioneers innovative, market-driven solutions to the global water crisis — breaking down barriers to give families hope, health and the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty.
In order to make money blogging you’re going to need to have a blog. While this is pretty obvious it is also a stumbling block for many PreBloggers who come to the idea of blogging with little or no technical background.
I get a ton of sponsored content and direct advertising requests, but most of them are super random or for crappy products. I say no 99% of the time, but occasionally a brand will reach out with a cool new product or idea that can actually help you save money or make more money, so then it’s a win-win. I’ve sold a few sponsored posts (less than 5 in 2017) and will keep selling them when they make sense. There are also other brands that reach out and want to buy a display ad placement on the website. If it the brand aligns and the price is right, then I’ll sell the placement.
With WordPress, creating a paid job board is easy. See our tutorial on how to create a job board in WordPress with WP Job Manager for a step-by-step walkthrough. You can use the WooCommerce Paid Listings addon to charge for job post submissions.
Wow that is great! $1k in a week is amazing for a side hustle. Im happy to hear you started your blog. Getting laid off is sometimes a blessing in disguise and hopefully it works out well for you. ILl check out your post too. 🙂
One thing I notice is that the people making the serious money on this list earn the bulk of it through affiliates, not necessarily ad networks. So that is something to think about. While ad networks can be lucrative, there are downsides to them. They slow down your blog, you don’t get to pick the ads that display, and they are kind of annoying/not pleasant to look at.
